Interestingly, i see AMP is one of the most sold stocks on Commsec (retail) but the buying volumes have been healthy since the announcement. I suspect you are right about the shorts, closing/reducing exposure and i suspect others (institutions) are also net buyers.
Should be a fun few days. Maybe the MOMO crowd will get back on-board?
