1. It does not seem that there are that many true believers among those well placed to judge - S&P is just one - and even it’s own board now, in the ability of the current strategy to produce a significant lift in profit in a short to medium time period.

2. Special dividends/capital return can be valuable due to franking credits but it is also just returning money that AMP raised at the current share price. The share buy back will not have a material short term impact. There will be 4% less shares but AMP will have $200m less cash or 4% loss of value.

3. The best way to defend against takeovers or get the price up us to have a great strategy that is delivering results of investors believe in. There Is no talk of this by the AMP right now. One of the reasons that AMP bought AXA was to fend off takeovers. A poor decision as it turns out. One made possibly by directors to defend their roles rather than maximise returns. But at least it was a strategy.

4. The bad news in my view is that I do not have confidence that AMP can grow the profit of this business with its current strategy or leadership. The board and leadership team is now weaker than it has ever been, with key vacancies in Wealth Management/Advice/AMP Capital. It is likely to just burn cash. Unfortunately this leaves the least worst scenario of selling the business in one way or another so that synergies will be paid for and we get something for them from the acquirer. A float of businesses will not deliver this. It Is not the greatest time to sell. If AMP could deliver $2.50 per share from a sale process over the next year, I would be happy
