No one and no government is going to force you to dump a perfectly good ICE vehicle and make you purchase a relatively expensive EV. What already is happening around the world is that ICE development is reducing, emission and av. fleet fuel economy laws are restricting available new ICE vehicle ranges while EVs are becoming widespread. CBDs and other densely populated areas will ban any ICE because of air and sound pollution then National Parks will soon follow. ICE vehicles will be regarded similarly to smokers today, they are still around but are a dying (literally) breed.
The take up of EVs is increasing exponentially all over the world but there are still Billions of ICE vehicles on the road and in 10 years time there still will be. The difference is that in 10 years time the majority of people will also have at least one EV in the household and will accept that they are better for many purposes than their old banger. I still like and admire the rumble of a 6L Chevy in an Australian built car but realised long ago that it is the sound of a dying dinosaur and our Holden Adventra will be the last ICE powered family wagon we ever own.
