I think rent is reasonable for such a city & location given the high wages in Sydney. Rental prices compared to income is certainly a lot higher in many parts of the world. I expect rental prices will continue to increase.
The net yield of these houses is quite pathetic. The price could and hopefully will come down. Have patience. Nobody can force you to buy so until you are able to provide accommodation more cheaply than a landlord can, continue to rent.
