Short covers are not reported for a few days (I think its 4 or 5 days) which is why the data available on shortman etc is usually behind by about a week. New shorts have to be reported on the day, but don't know the net figure until the covers are reported later.
I think that its still useful though as you can see what percentage of that day's trade was short - if only about 5% of sales for the day are short then unlikely to be pushing it down, however, if 50% of the trades on the day were short it would have a large impact on pushing price down on the day.
