    WA’s Future Battery and Critical Minerals Industries Strategy

    There was an important new document tucked under my arm when I met with one of the world’s top Fortune 500 companies in Germany yesterday.

    The document is the Government’s freshly published prospectus for investors laying out the opportunities in WA as a global battery and critical minerals hub.

    The timing was perfect to deliver a copy to Matthias Dohrn, BASF Senior Vice President of Battery Metal and Recycling, while discussing WA’s diversification strategy.

    BASF is one of the world’s largest chemical manufacturers, including battery materials.

    So our discussions included WA’s huge potential - both for supplying critical minerals and downstream development - as the world transitions to renewables. Back in 2019 we launched WA’s Future Battery and Critical Minerals Industries Strategy which set out the Government’s vision to grow the state’s participation in global battery and critical minerals supply chains.

    This prospectus takes that vision to the next level. It sets out clearly the opportunities in WA to attract new investment and establish strategic partnerships.

    Our strength is we are a reliable, ethical and cost effective supplier of battery and critical minerals and clean energy products.

    WA’s in an enviable position because of the rapid transition taking place in electric vehicles and renewable energy.

    Our State has some of the world’s largest deposits of critical minerals, with further discoveries anticipated following a recent boom in exploration activity.

    WA is a leading supplier of lithium (world top producer last year), cobalt (ranked 2nd), rare earths (4th), nickel (5th) and manganese (8th). When you look at the minerals needed for electric vehicles (lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, graphite and rare earth minerals); wind and solar renewable energy technologies (nickel, manganese, chromium, cobalt, silicon, gallium, germanium and rare earth minerals) and battery storage (nickel, cobalt, high purity aluminium, graphite, lithium, manganese, vanadium), you can see where WA fits in.

    The prospectus is really well put together and I recommend reading it for anyone wanting to understand more about WA’s future beyond traditional mining.
