In the final toss-up, investing in biotechs comes down to luck - do they have a viable product - or products? Will their product be outstanding or unique? Can they deliver these to the market in a timely manner? Are they in front in the marketplace or are there competitors that may get there first.
It gets down to how confident an investor is in the company AND whether they are willing to park funds away for a significant time. Any fall in the SP challengers both these points.
Investing is not much fun at times.
