@Scott th Ratbag; nuclear is relatively 'safe' until there are terror attacks, attacks from countries like Russia and Israel, economic problems leading to poor management / maintenance, massive earthquakes triggering tsunamis etc.
Once there's an issue even in countries including the USA and Japan it's an absolute bluddy nightmare because of the long half-life of nuclear matter - disposing of waste water into oceans etc isn't a solution it's just kicking the can down the road.
Even before factoring in long term issues and storage, nuclear power is currently ten times as expensive as that from renewable sources. Since Australia's doesn't yet have a commercial nuclear sector, establishing gone and then building power plants is itself expensive and means a delay before coming on stream of two decades.
When those Australian political leaders living near or on Sydney Harbor and their $Wealthy mates volunteer to build Australia's first nuclear power plant somewhere in Sydney Harbor I'll take the nuclear option more seriously.
