The one great resource which is untapped in Australia is the rural resource. Other countries make good use of it, but for some reason, its seen as little more than a sink hole here. I have never understood why this is so. There are many inland growth areas that could support industry and employment, with vastly cheaper housing, and no congestion problems. It happens in America, Phoenix is the classic example, a thriving city of 4 million in an environment simliar to inland South Australia. The cities of Wagga, Tamworth, Albury and Dubbo have thriving economies, affordable housing, and are within an hour of the coast.
I know the response to this is usually; "Yes, but.." but that does not change the fact that these places are prosperous busy centres, full of opportunity.
