1. Phone calls are privileged in that you are under no obligation to relay the talks to a third party.
2. Presentations clearly distance themselves from being official when they hedge against taking their "forward-looking declarations as binding". That disclaimer says everything about how official presentations are.
3. You state that you don't have a problem with cynicism but then you go on to list every reason why it is somehow unwarranted. That is a clear sign of what you think of the cynics.
Whatever the company officer says to you, do you think he or she would straight out tell you that the company is doing badly (if it actually was doing badly)? Have you ever come across a company that told its SHs that it was doing badly? So, no. There is absolutely no reason why speaking to a company officer should allay any sort of fear for an investment.
I think it's better when we are more realistic than idealistic. At least, let's be a little more reserved that simply thinking everything will be wonderful.
