I suppose it is possible from time-to-time to make money shorting good companies like WES (who can forget the genius who tried to make his fortune shorting WOW a few months back because he thought it was insolvent !!) but these are not the 'percentage' plays.
Even when it is 'right' to short WES there are probably 1,000 companies out there which offer better 'short' odds.
The (long) / (short) game is best played as a (long quality) / (short cr*ap) game. This gives you the best odds.
And as the legendary Julian Robertson used to say,
'If you have a list of 100 companies and you cant pick the top 20 and bottom 20 in quality, you shouldnt be in the game at all'
