It really depends on what the SP was when they initiated the short positions, if it was say 6 or 8 dollars then a move of 30%-50% at current prices is really not a huge amount from their perspective.
The group that really perplexes me are the lenders of the shares, they presumably are not concerned about the SP at all. If they decide to call back their shares then the shorting will finish.
