Where to buy in QLD?

The Mrs and I want to move to QLD. We are sick of this crappy Sydney weather and over-inflated house prices. Looking to move around Sept - Oct.

But we dont have a clue where in QLD we should go. My mrs is studying medicine and there is a campus in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane and also Southport, Gold Goast. So not too far from one of these. We like to live near a major shopping centre. Apart from those 2 things, we really dont care where we are. We are living in a large 2 bed unit at the moment and dont really need more room.

There was a story on Today Tonight about property scams in QLD and NSW people being sucked into paying $120k for a property worth $70k. Where are these? $70k sounds good to me.
