I guess its a tradeoff, Telstras point of distinction is its better geographic coverage, but that also comes at a cost. The towers in high density areas would have the lowest cost/overheads per customer, and more remote towers higher cost.

So telstra losses their geographic advantage, but also reduces their cost.

Telstra has fibre to their towers (of course), so Optus or TPG would have to lease fibre access from Telstra towers to a POI, Vocus has talked about wanting to provide fibre access to towers, but i dont know if ACCC would go that far, they wouldnt want to try and force things when competition is opening up naturally.

Perhaps Telstra will put conditions on tower access, similar to peering agreements, where the deals they offer are conditional on how usefull the other party is to them. With the 5G rollout everyone will need more towers, even Telstra will want more metro towers because higher frequencies dont bounce around so much.

Too early to say how it will work out imo, but the big advantage still imo from the separation is just the simplification, which could improve transparency and accountability. There is just too much stuff to properly understand Telstra as a buisness right now.
