The obsession of shareholders and management over dividends rather than EPS is bad in the long term. Companies should face a dificult decision as to wether they pay divi, or retain earnings and reduce debt, or reinvest, but Telstra has made long ter commitments to everyone to keep focusing on the next payday. One day Telstra isn't going to be dividend stock, and its going to cause a big shock.
