I agree with you though. Since Sol (and a bit of Thodey) I think management has been poor but I think the real mistake was not setting up "new Telstra" on the cloud. They really could have simplified the business but were never willing to bite the bullet.
Too much mediocre internal management and too many consultants and IT firms getting their feed instead. Outsourcing is a corporate cancer.
Instead of the big firms and Government paying top dollar to get the best strategic and technical leadership in house they hire and promote duds who are happy to pay upwards of $1,400/day year in year out for kids with 2-5 years of experience (the consulting firms only pay them $100 to $150k per annum, you do the math).
It's even worse because the consulting firms just want to keep busy so don't really care if they're building the wrong thing and the middle managers don't have the experience to manage the consultancies.
It's a crying shame and I see it ALL THE TIME. If anyone tells you outsourcing strategic functions is going to save money my first reaction is usually to look at what's in it for them.
