Privacy is the foundation of secrets, and privacy is right granted to all, so to be able to protect their own secrets and see others, they need to attack that right to privacy that people have, but thats not new.
The big difference in the digital age is the ease at which it can be done, and the commercialization of it. Surveilence capitalism wasnt a thing in the cold war, it is now with Google, Facebook, others.
Its so ironic that everyone started using encryption in part because of government data retention laws, then the government complained about everyone using encryption, so they had to have laws to all themselves to hack into our private communications. The government started an arms race between themselves the people, what comes next ?
Paranoia doesnt come into it, everyone is being spied on, its a document legal requirement, and we have no influence over who the information is shared with.
Even if we cant win, we can make it more difficult, civil disobedience can force them escalate the surveillance arms race.
