We can compare the gross yield from one company to another and forget about this stupid franked vs unfranked thing.
It's a red herring.
franked dividends do not inherently give you any benefit.
NOW.....
The interesting bit is as you mention.
There could be other factors at play that gave raise to companies that frank their dividends to pay an outright higher gross yield.
Lol.... maybe it's cause everyone started buying companies that frank their dividends.
That of course is another matter, separate to the franked credits vs unfranked question.
I'll have a look...as a matter of interest.
