You are right. No one can predict the future (rule no 1 in my investing plan). Investing is a risky business. But risk can be reduced if you do your homework.
Investment gurus like Warren and Peter Lynch encourage investors to observe the businesses (stocks) they purchased. Your observation about Telstra shops could be helpful to you. Likewise for banks, supermarkets and etc.
