Bitcoin is digital cash, we have seen a trend of governments restricting cash and pushing people toward traceable means. The issue for bitcoin, is how and when will governments intervene. As of last week bitcoin exchanges need to register with the government, in the end i expect all exchanges will be operated in tax havens, so everything changes and everything stays the same.

The value of bitcoin was supposed to be related to transactions between currencies (like with your transaction to india), so it has the potential to disrupt old inefficient methods, the value of that to society is unrelated to the value of a bitcoin, it doesnt matter if the bitcoin is $1 or $1000 if it stays stable through the transaction.

The value of a bitcoin only matters to people using it as an investment, and really, its real value can only change in response to lost bitcoins (permanently making coins more scarce), or increasingly slow transaction times (temporarily more scarce), but if transactions times increase it makes it likely to be more volatile, and therefore less usable for its legit purpose.

Digital cash will never disappear, but governments will take extreme steps to control their currency.
