Ummm, which part of the community didn't want FTTP NBN? Only people who already had fast internet. 5G will never handle the load of what an FTTP network could provide.
I keep saying this - 4G/5G is only fast so long as not everyone is using it as their primary network. If every single person in Australia switched off their landline and wifi connections right now, how well do you think the mobile network would cope?
The price is a drop in the ocean compared to other infrastructure projects. We're going to spend twice as much on a few submarines that will drift around in the ocean doing literally nothing.
