The yen was the carry trade because they had interest rates set at very low levels (close to zero) for many years. Now the US has also rate set close to zero. There's no income for them in this trade, they do it to stimulate the economy by providing low rates domestically, and perhaps also to keep their currencies low through the carry trade - though they don't overtly state this.
