BumsOnSeats: What I should have said to be absolutely correct: At that time, people in general did have TV at home but certainly NO CNN reporting 24hours endlessly news to all corners of the world. And normal homes did certainly NOT have any computers either to get information. The pre-dominant source of information in those days was still PRINT and in particular - for "breaking news" - NEWSPAPERS.
