Sylvania Township trustees are expected next week to vote on a proposed contract with Redflex Traffic Systems, a firm that installs and administers a camera system designed to catch speeders and motorists running red lights.
A procedural problem stalled a vote last week, but Dennis Boyle, chairman of the trustees, said the vote should go forward at the meeting next Thursday.

Police Chief Joseph Valvano said the number and location of the cameras won't be determined until after a visit from Redflex officials. They, along with the police, will study the intersections where the cameras can best be placed.

The chief said some of them will likely be on Central Avenue, in an attempt to decrease accidents and complaints from motorists.

He added that although there may be some increase in income from tickets issued because of the cameras, the township's purpose in installing them is to increase safety on the roadways.

Trustees earlier passed the first reading of a measure which will call for a $100 fine for both speeders and those who run red lights.

That measure is also scheduled to be voted on next Thursday for the second of three necessary readings.

The fines are for what are considered civil violations, and offenses won't be reported to the state and used to add points toward a possible driver's license suspension.

The cameras and their installation are done at the company's expense and Redflex will keep 75 percent of the fines collected.

One or more hearing officers will be appointed by trustees to consider appeals to tickets issued through the system.

Trustees said they will likely contact attorneys who live in the township to determine who might be interested in being a hearing officer.

Chief Valvano said a location has not yet been determined for the hearings and added that scheduling will probably be determined by the number of appeals.
