That could, indeed, be the case.
I'm aware of a person who defamed someone on a relatively obscure BB.
The person sued the BB for publishing the message - they in turn passed on the problem to the person who posted who settled, and paid about $15k, to make it go away.
And that was in the late '90s - I'd say public defamation would be a risky business these days.
