So far, 215 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 have posted quarterly earnings, according to Thomson First Call. Sixty percent of those have topped Wall Street's expectations -- higher than the historical average of 58 percent. Thirteen percent have missed analysts' targets, lower than the average of 21 percent, according to the research firm.
This seems to sum up market sentiment at present with many people sitting on the sidelines.
