Do you really know about the method and economics of long wall mining of graphite along elongated enriched veins? The coal industry have been mining profitably down to 1km and deeper for eons. You simply follow the enriched veins. Indeed, you only need to locate a few starting near the surface and you can happily mine for many years. It's quite easy really.
