They've said 'gas kick' in their release Stu & I've explained how the setup works on a rig. We don't know if they deployed a basic CO2 detecting sensor.
An operator generally wait for wireline logs b4 integrating a raft of drilling, gas parameters with the WL data to make a definitive call.
And when they eventually do a flow test, they get their handsfull on the actual gas sample/ concentration, temperature, pressure etc.
In this era, no operator would drill a well offshore without a realtime gas monitoring system, ie gas chromatograph. One sets up an 'alarm' on the gas monitor, mud-pit levels & pressure readings for early kick detection. Wellsite/rig geology 101.
We'll just have to wait patiently for results frm the sidetrack section.
cheers
