Don Argus, BHP Chairman from todays article in The Age.
Mr Argus also called on governments around the globe to join forces with big business to develop new technologies that reduce or capture greenhouse gases.
He told shareholders that while alternative energy methods were becoming more common, the use of coal would continue to grow.
"A key solution in relation to coal therefore lies in technology and developing ways to REDUCE or capture its greenhouse gas emissions," Mr Argus said.
"It is imperative that governments around the world form partnerships with business and communities to take active measures to support the development of these technologies."
BHP Billiton unveiled its own climate change policy four months ago, saying it would cut the energy and greenhouse "intensity" of its products by 13 per cent and six per cent respectively by 2012.
