This latest new find on crack defect on a Boeing 777 is right up our ally. Once installed a CVM sensor can check for these in 15 min while aircraft is at the gate. Try doing that with an eddy current test, need to book it into a hanger then have a crew strip the area for test. Good two days or more to satisfy the FAA guidance.WASHINGTON– The Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) has issued a new Airworthiness Directive (AD), effectivefrom April 23, 2025. This applies toall Boeing 777-200, -200LR, -300, -300ER, and 777F aircraft models.
This regulatory action follows thediscovery of a 5-inch crack on the right wing’s upper skin at a specific wing station. Under the directive,operators must conduct recurring inspections. These inspections are to checkfor cracks in the upper wing skin around certain fasteners. Then, performrequired remedial actions when issues are found. The FAA has implemented thisAD to mitigate safety risks associated with this condition across the affectedfleet.
Significantly,the FAA changed the required inspection method from the originally proposed ultrasonic (UT) inspections to open-hole high-frequencyeddy current (HFEC) inspections. HFEC proved more effective at detecting theseparticular cracks. The directive mandates recurring inspections of the upperwing skin around certain fasteners and appropriate remedial actions to addressthis safety concern.
Another application to add on to the existing APB we are waiting on.
