supertramp the number quoted by bioshares for viral drop is incorrect (the atc and idenix nnrti numbers are very similar), and bioshares do not refer to the difference between nrti's and nnrti's, and the issue of resistance
fyi, nnrti's mode of action is to have a much greater short term impact on viral load, in general, than nrti's. but if only a nnrti were used, that benefit would last a very shot time and lead to a very high load of resistant virus
the interesting thing is, even with the expected much greater shrt term viral drop of an nnrti, atc almost matched the idenix drug on the nnrti turf. atc will blow it away over a longer term (more than 3wks) in %detectable, cd4 and resistance developed
that is why nrti's and 2 in particular, are the backbone to hiv treatment, they dont have the shrt term muscle, but lead to a longer term decline in load...
but unfortunately resistance still eventually builds
so the need for nrti's that act against resistance, to other nrti's and nnrti/pi..., is v high
so, if its suggested an nnrti is going to compete intensley with an nrti addressing resistance, it shows a lack of understanding of the mode of action of the different drugs
