Whilst PPL is a great and important social reform, and I believe any progressive politician would embrace it (such as Whitlam), Hairyback's comment was that Whitlam would support Abbott's paid parental scheme - which is a pretty big call.
Abbott's scheme is ludicrously expensive, 4-5x more compared with the more moderate proposals out there. What's more he needs to slap a 1.5% corporate tax increase on Australia's biggest companies to pay for it.
Furthermore it looks very much like Abbott's PPL is never going to see the light of day, his own party and backers are in revolt over it... bigtime.
If even a big ol' lefty like myself can spot some cost problems with Abbott's PPL, then I'd think anyone could.
