we were children then, from working class & immigrant stock, mostly ignorant of politics
he connected with the people. the people understood him (unlike Fraser, who seemed like an upper class freak with his accent)
like Hawke, he connected with the people & shared & understood the inspirations & needs of the people
brought Australia into contemporary culture
