Folk who put clogs in toilets should be booted out.
On etymology, it is unlikely that the French proletariat would be so wasteful as to throw clogs into industrial machines, thus destroying personal property, when a chunk of wood, or cobblestones, that were not theirs would do the intended damage. That “sabotage” is ultimately derived from “sabot” is likely, but it would probably be derived from a metaphoric verb derived from “sabot” – e.g., to damage/hinder things, or hurt/hinder people, by kicking them; or from the notion that sabots hinder (making wearers hobble rather than stride).
