Just watched C-Span3 on TV (funny that it was on at a ridiculous hour - like 2 AM on). The Senate Finance Committee, lead by Sen. Grassley, grilled/toasted the heads of seven big pharma companies (AbbVie, Johnson and Johnson, Merck, Sanofi, etc. - all were CEO's except a VP from J&J) concerning the exorbitant drug prices in the US.
One of the interesting things that came out is the "patent game." Humera has over a hundred patents. Each patent seems to extend abbVie's exclusivity - thus it pays AbbVie to find ways to create new patents for the same drug. I was under the foolish notion that once you had a patent you were protected (as long as you were willing to defend your rights). It seems the water is much muddier than that. Every little usage, alteration, etc. creates (what seems to be) a new patent opportunity. They are constantly finding justification for new patents and keeping the golden goose popping out those eggs.
PBT2 probably has to be patented specific to this new usage(s) and variations of such. This is potentially a massive undertaking, considering Pbt2 and Zn appear to work with an extensive number of antibiotiics.
This appears to be a way to milk the system and Grassley commented that the senate should look into this. AbbVie, using the patent-game, has extended Humera's exclusivity for 31years...so far.
Anyway, hopefully GK and the Prana wigs are getting this into gear and lining up these patents before others murk up the water.
