My personal opinion is that the book of Revelation was written for people under persecution at the time and only comes close to making sense if viewed in the light.
It would make no sense (to me) if, for example, someone tried to comfort people under persecution in 2017 by telling them that they can look forward to the their problems being dealt with in 2000 years from now.
I think that the questions of the "end times" and the Anti-Christ are part of the new age religious beliefs that started in the 19th century and continue unabated.
