I have only lived here for a few years. However the one thing that amazes me is the amount of paper that finds its way into the postal system. I cannot think of any first world country today outside of Australia that sends so many notices re share investments , bank accounts, letters etc. Overseas you can opt out and get virtually everything via email. I havent seen so many printed bank statements in my life.
Why ,if we are to be so green, don't we rather, reduce the demand for paper and not block each step forward in technology. Its like saying we cannot build new coal fired power stations even though they may be 50% more efficient than the ones operating today. We seem to fight the improvements but never put to death the bad practices that got us here in the first place.
In my travels I have been to many 3rd world plants (not all wood by the way) and the practices I see there appall me yet we will carp until we block the new plants here and rather have very poor plants elsewhere. It seems illogical. Just as illogical as justifying the hijackers off Somalia on the basis that they have lost their livelihood by over fishing so its rational that they now hijack ships.
We care for the perpetrators of crime more than we take care of the victims. We dont care if Gunns fails and yet we know that other producers where the paper will be made will probably not be as well policed in regard to the environment.
Really I think this is an investment forum and if you dont want to invest in GNS so be it but isnt it time you allowed the freedom of others to do that that they see as a valid investment. Your problem should be with government and if you cannot change government why should you presume that you dont have to abide by the will of the majority. It seems that for a few people not getting the majority or the decision they want doesn't permit them to accept that they may be in the minority.
No position but hold GNSPA
