This is unlike the bird flu. The bird flu had a very high fatality rate (61% of recorded cases) but only 421 cases were recorded in the 6 years since 2003. In addition, the vast majority of bird flu cases (perhaps all) were bird to human transmission. The transmission was easily stopped by culling of birds. The new swine flu cases documented are nearly all human to human transmissions.
