One theory at the time was that he had become totally disoriented at the time and had become inverted.......with the lights "above" him actually being below him.....would explain his engine running rough...
That actually happened in the US (in the late '60's?)to a formation of military jets flying in IMF conditions. One guy looked up during a break in cloud cover, and noted the "stars" were getting nearer overhead??? He yelled a warning & rolled out, the rest of the flight plowed in....the stars were the lights of houses...
I know a 182 wouldnt fly inverted for long, but??? Have seen some strange things, but never a UFO... And some strange people do strange things. Camped south of the Gunbarrel Highway , way East from Wiluna, many years back, and late at night, I saw a light come on in the sky far in the distance. As I watched, the light dipped down, dipped upwards and over, then down towards me again, where it steadied....and then suddenly went out.... A UFO? No, it was some nut, out in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, that decided to switch on his landing light, and do a loop, lol. And he hadnt had his navigation lights on, either....Wonder what he was doing out there?
