Turnbull did actually "win" the election, albeit narrowly and by saving Abbott's skin in Warringah.
Abbott was handed government by Rudd-Gillard-Rudd, and in many respects was an accidental PM. His shortcomings in the job became readily apparent and his party put him on notice. Abbott chose to ignore the warning, and was on track to take the government down with him.
