A BOP is a tool used to seal the annulus around drillpipe or casing if there is a "kick" (if the pressure in the formation is greater than the pressure created by the hyrostatic head of the drilling fluid). There should be no such thing as a "blow out" these days. If there is it means something has gone drastically wrong and it may be a good time to consider selling.
