Nothing to do with the bigger picture - it gets down to a simple mathematical equation risk vs reward. The balance sheet is part of that assessment. If they can't commercialise a product they run out of money it's really that simple in 'the bigger picture'. A course in business management my be advisable to gain such insights?
I'm neuter about the company par se the only thing I focus on can they pull it off, what product or patent is totally irrelevant, for a small outlay it has potential. Like going to a closing down 'sale' - you might just get a bargain!
