Clearly, you haven't dealt with serious sized companies. Your comments clearly appear that you are projecting your exposure to business and not what is prescriptive to Anteotech's circumstance.
The Sales Director will be in place when the time and products are right. It would have been Folly to go sooner. A simple analysis of the new hiring regime reveals significant gateways are at hand.
