Posco kicks off silicon anode business with new factory

Posco Silicon Solution completes new Pohang facility

Posco Silicon Solution said on Thursday that it has completed its factory at Pohang that will produce 550 metric tonnes of silicon anode a year.
The amount is enough to power 275,000 units of electric vehicle, the anode making subsidiary of Posco Group said.
The company completed the facility that coats the silicon composite and the other that synthesizes oxide silicon earlier this month, completing the factory.
Silicon anode adds silicon to graphite to increase energy density. Posco Silicon Solution said traditional graphite anode has an energy density of 372mAh per gram but silicon anode has over 400mAh per gram.
This increase in energy density will allow batteries that use these anodes offer more travel distance per charge for EVs, they said.
Posco acquired silicon anode startup Tera Technos in July 2022 and renamed it Posco Silicon Solution. It aims to secure 25,000 metric tonnes per year in production capacity by 2030.
