Choi’s attention focused on M Line, which makes small batteries using new processes

Samsung SDI CEO Choi Joo-sun toured the company’s Cheonan facility in South Korea last week for a new year on-site inspection, TheElec has learned.
Executive vice president Seung Gi Baek, who heads the company’s small battery manufacturing technology development, guided Choi on the tour, sources said.
The CEO showed the most interest in the M Line at Cheonan, they said. The pilot line manufactures new batteries for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks using new processes. The line uses the stacking method to make these batteries.
Samsung SDI adopted the stacking method for larger batteries used in electric vehicles, starting with their fifth-generation. It is now attempting to use this technique in the production of smaller batteries, which were made within winding technique rather than stacking conventionally.
Raw materials that are winded are called jelly rolls and these were used mostly for prismatic batteries. But after 2020, stacking is steadily replacing them.
This is because stacking can increase energy density by over 10% compared to winding.
However, additional equipment for notching and stacking must be added to production lines.
Choi is expected to decide, after his inspection of the M Line, to build commercial production lines for small batteries made with the stacking method.
Candidates for these new lines are Vietnam, where Samsung SDI has small batter pack partners, and Malaysia, where it has a factory for cylindrical batteries.
Sources said new lines will likely be built at Malaysia as the factory is already managed by its small battery business, which Baek is a part of.
Samsung SDI has made the majority of its small batteries at Tianjin, China. It is likely hoping to win more order from Samsung Electronics, which in turn is using more batteries from LG Energy Solution, ATL, and BYD.
