1) the options were gifted free, so no loss there.
2) a loss can be offset against another gain to reduce imminent tax liability, and
3) the proceeds can be invested elsewhere for a better return.
there’d be many other motivating factors, and some maybe not by choice, divorce, loan repayment, margin call, etc.
not everyone gets to enjoy selling for a profit.
