I think the key functionality of 'threading without Thred' that you are ignoring would be the ability to message people on multiple platforms (e.g. email, SMS, Facebook, Twitter) from the same app (Thred) without having to go into each platform and re-typing the message.
If Thred can achieve that, they may have a valuable product as I am not aware of an app that can currently provide this functionality.
