Its something we have been conditioned to believe (they are worth it) and its now considered the norm. Personally id be more for a low base wage and performance incentives, obviously thats a fine line wouldnt want to encourage unnecessary risk taking based purely on greed (Im looking at you investment banks etc)
Imo no-one is worth that kind of money.
