The Pharmaceutical Society is not (yet) endorsing it's use for Covid19 but they are resisting doctor's efforts to obtain it for that purpose.

They are urging pharmacies to hold it for current approved treatments.

"Why PSA wants pharmacists to refuse to dispense off-label hydroxychloroquine

Professor Chris Freeman is concerned about keeping stock for sick patients

Pharmacists should refuse to dispense off-label prescriptions of hydroxychloroquine, says the PSA.

This follows a surge in just-in-case prescriptions after US President Donald Trump said the malaria medication showed promise for treating COVID-19.

An increasing number of doctors and dentists appear to be prescribing the medicine for colleagues and family, the PSA says.

In an open letter, PSA president Associate Professor Chris Freeman urges prescribers to offer the drug “judiciously” and for pharmacists to refuse to dispense off-label prescriptions.

At this stage, it should only be used as indicated, for inflammatory conditions or the suppression and treatment of malaria, he writes.

“The PSA would like to keep safe any stock of hydroxychloroquine held in local pharmacies — so it is available to treat patients who genuinely need this medicine.

“The only way this is possible is for prescribers to not write prescriptions for this medicine as a just-in-case measure and for pharmacists to refuse the supply outside of these indications at this point in time.”

Professor Freeman says the PSA is continuing to work with the TGA and Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt on the appropriate management of national stockpiles and medicines stock.

“While the data may not yet be clear, if hydroxychloroquine is shown to be effective for COVID-19, we want every dose available to treat those who may require it.”"
