as our society started paying comparatively less for teaching and more for jobs in the corporate world men in particular migrated out of teaching. This is consistent with “breadwinner” expectations that still exist
there were more women choosing to work, more attending tertiary education and more deciding they didn’t want to be nurses or secretaries teaching looked like a decent option
the relative status of teaching diminished and that contributed to fewer men. Further, as feminisation increased status and pay decreased relative to other sectors
and grip all you like as you and some others do - if you pay rubbishy rates you are not going to attract the best even if you do find some brilliant and dedicated teachers
